Chiang Mai is what travelers move to when they fall in love with Thailand. The walled old city contains over 30 temples in a few square kilometers; the surrounding mountains have hill-tribe villages, waterfalls, and ethical elephant sanctuaries; and the city itself has incredible food, affordable luxury hotels, and a community of nomads, monks, and locals that mostly coexist. Don't ride elephants — visit the genuine sanctuaries that no longer offer rides.

Chiang Mai travel FAQ

How many days do you need in Chiang Mai?+

Three to four days for the city and one or two day trips. Easy to extend to a week if you slow down or take a cooking class.

Chiang Mai or Bangkok?+

Different vibes — Bangkok is intense and urban; Chiang Mai is mellow and cultural. Most travelers do both, with Bangkok first as the entry point.

Are elephant rides ethical?+

No — they require painful 'breaking' as babies. Visit a sanctuary that doesn't offer rides (Elephant Nature Park is the gold standard) and walk alongside the elephants instead.

When should I avoid Chiang Mai?+

March-April: 'burning season' when farmers burn fields and the air quality drops to hazardous levels for weeks. Check AQI before booking.

Is Chiang Mai walkable?+

The old city is, but you'll need a Grab or songthaew (red truck) for longer trips. Renting a scooter is cheap but the traffic is dangerous if you're not experienced.
