Tokyo is staggeringly large — 13 million people across 23 wards — but it doesn't feel chaotic. It feels meticulously organized. Crossing Shibuya at rush hour, eating tempura at a 100-year-old counter, riding the Yamanote line in silence — Tokyo is a city of small, perfect experiences. First-time visitors should base in Shinjuku or Shibuya for the convenience, build their days around two or three neighborhoods at a time, and trust that even the random side-street ramen shop will be excellent.

Best time to visit Tokyo
Late March to early April brings the cherry blossoms; November delivers koyo (autumn leaves) and crisp blue-sky days. Both are peak seasons — book far ahead.
Where to stay in Tokyo
Shinjuku
The ultimate Tokyo experience — neon canyons, Golden Gai's micro-bars, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government observation deck, and the world's busiest train station.
Shibuya
The famous scramble crossing, youth fashion, izakayas under the train tracks, and the Shibuya Sky observation deck.
Harajuku & Aoyama
Takeshita Street's kawaii fashion, Meiji Shrine's quiet forest, and the Omotesando shopping boulevard.
Asakusa
Old Tokyo with Senso-ji temple, traditional craft shops, and street food along Nakamise. Great for first impressions.
Shimokitazawa
Indie record shops, vintage stores, tiny live houses, and laid-back cafés. Tokyo's bohemian side.
Yanaka
One of the few neighborhoods that survived WWII intact. Wooden houses, cat-filled lanes, and old-school shotengai shopping streets.
Best things to do in Tokyo
The experiences locals and seasoned travelers actually recommend.
Senso-ji Temple
Tokyo's oldest temple, founded in 645. Walk up Nakamise-dori through the souvenir stalls and aim for an early morning visit.
Tsukiji Outer Market
The wholesale tuna auction has moved to Toyosu, but Tsukiji's outer market remains a paradise of sushi breakfasts, fresh wasabi, and tamagoyaki on a stick.
TeamLab Planets
Immersive digital art installation where you walk barefoot through water gardens. Book tickets weeks in advance.
Shibuya Sky
Open-air rooftop observation deck atop Shibuya Scramble Square. The best Tokyo view, especially at sunset.
Golden Gai
Six narrow alleys of 200 micro-bars, each seating 5-8 people. Most charge a small cover. Pop into 2-3 over an evening.
Sushi at a counter
Splurge on omakase at a small counter — Sushi Saito or Sushi Yoshitake at the high end, Tsuta or Manten Sushi for accessible mid-range bookings.
Day trip to Hakone
Two hours by train. Lake Ashi, Mount Fuji views (on a clear day), and traditional ryokan onsen baths.

Tokyo travel FAQ
How many days do you need in Tokyo?+
Five days minimum for a first visit, and you'll still feel like you barely scratched the surface. Seven to ten days lets you mix in day trips to Kamakura, Nikko, or Hakone.
Is Tokyo expensive?+
Less than people expect. Hotels and trains are pricey, but a great ramen costs $9, convenience-store food is genuinely good, and most temples and shrines are free.
Do I need to speak Japanese?+
No, but Tokyo English fluency is lower than European capitals. Google Translate's camera mode handles menus, and most train signs include English.
Should I get a JR Pass?+
Only if you're combining Tokyo with Kyoto, Osaka, or Hiroshima. For Tokyo-only trips, the metro IC card (Suica or Pasmo) is all you need.
When is cherry blossom season?+
Typically March 25 – April 5 in central Tokyo, but it shifts by a week each year. Watch the Japan Meteorological Corporation forecast in February.
