Sydney is the most enjoyable major city in the Southern Hemisphere — the harbor, the climate, the food, the beaches, the proximity of nature. Spend a day on the harbor (ferry to Manly is essentially a free cruise), a day on the beach (Bondi to Coogee coastal walk), and a day in the city itself (Opera House, Royal Botanic Garden, the Rocks). The Blue Mountains are 90 minutes by train and worth a day trip if you have time.

Best time to visit Sydney
Spring and fall offer mild weather and uncrowded beaches. December-February is peak (Australian summer) — beautiful but busy. Winter (June-August) is mild but the ocean is too cold to swim.
Where to stay in Sydney
The Rocks
Sydney's oldest neighborhood under the Harbour Bridge. Cobblestoned, touristy, with the best Sunday market.
Surry Hills
Hipster heartland — best brunch, best small bars, walking distance to Central Station.
Bondi
The famous beach. Stay here for surf-town vibes, but it's a 30-minute bus to the city.
Newtown
Inner-west bohemian district — vintage shops, indie bookshops, and the city's best pub scene on King Street.
Manly
Beach suburb across the harbor. The 30-minute ferry ride from Circular Quay is the cheapest harbor cruise on Earth.
Best things to do in Sydney
The experiences locals and seasoned travelers actually recommend.
Sydney Opera House tour
The 1-hour interior tour explains the wild engineering story. Better yet — book a show.
Bondi to Coogee coastal walk
Six kilometers along the cliffs and beaches. Allow 2-3 hours with stops for swims and coffee. The most-recommended thing in Sydney for good reason.
Manly ferry from Circular Quay
Thirty minutes across the harbor on a public ferry — past the Opera House, Harbour Bridge, and into open water. Bring sunscreen.
Sydney Harbour Bridge climb
Genuine scary in the best way. BridgeClimb has done over 4 million climbs. Book the dawn or dusk slot.
Royal Botanic Garden
Free, sprawling, with Mrs Macquarie's Chair (the postcard view of Opera House and Bridge together).
Blue Mountains day trip
Train to Katoomba (90 min), see the Three Sisters, hike at Wentworth Falls, ride the scenic railway.
Brunch in Surry Hills
Single Origin, Bourke Street Bakery, Reuben Hills. Australia invented modern brunch culture; eat in its capital.
