Prague survived World War II largely unbombed, and it shows — the Old Town, Lesser Town, and Castle district form one of the most architecturally complete historic centers in Europe. It's also the birthplace of pilsner, has a thriving contemporary art scene, and remains genuinely affordable by Western European standards. Avoid Old Town Square at peak hours and head for Vinohrady or Žižkov for the city locals actually live in.

Where to stay in Prague

Staré Město (Old Town)

The medieval heart with the Astronomical Clock, Charles Bridge, and the Old Town Square. Touristy but worth the time.

Malá Strana (Lesser Town)

Baroque palaces and gardens at the foot of the castle. Quieter than the Old Town, especially in the evenings.

Vinohrady

Leafy residential district with the city's best café culture, art nouveau apartments, and Náměstí Míru square.

Žižkov

Bohemian, gritty, full of dive bars and the famous TV Tower. Where actual Praguers drink.

Holešovice

Up-and-coming district north of the river with the National Gallery, DOX contemporary art center, and Letná Park's beer garden.

The 14th-century stone bridge with 30 baroque saints. Go before 7am to actually experience it without the crowd.

Hilltop biergarten with sweeping views of the city's bridges. Order a half-liter of Pilsner Urquell and stay an afternoon.

A 500-year-old beer hall brewing its own dark lager since 1499. Touristy but historic and the beer is fantastic.

Prague travel FAQ

How many days do you need in Prague?+

Three days is perfect — one for the castle and Lesser Town, one for the Old Town and Jewish Quarter, one for the local neighborhoods like Vinohrady.

Is Prague cheap?+

Yes by European standards — beer is $2-3, full restaurant meals run $10-15, and good hotels start around $80.

Do they use the Euro in Prague?+

No — Czech koruna (CZK). Some tourist spots accept Euros at terrible rates. Pay in CZK with a card or withdraw from a bank ATM (avoid the standalone yellow Euronet machines).

Is Prague crowded?+

The Old Town is mobbed midday in summer. Go early morning, late evening, or in shoulder season, and explore Vinohrady, Žižkov, and Holešovice for breathing room.

Is Prague safe?+

Very safe overall. The main risk is getting overcharged by dodgy taxis and tourist-trap currency exchanges. Use Bolt or Liftago instead of street taxis.
