Marrakech

An ancient walled city of riads, souks, and a medieval medina that feels like time travel.

Marrakech is sensory overload in the best way — spice piles in the souks, mint tea in tiled courtyards, snake charmers and storytellers in Jemaa el-Fnaa, and the call to prayer drifting across rose-colored walls. Stay in a traditional riad inside the medina (the walled old city) for the immersion, but plan a day trip out to the cooler Atlas Mountains or the gardens of the new town. The medina is genuinely confusing — embrace getting lost, and don't fight it when local kids offer to guide you back to a landmark for a few dirham.

Best time to visit Marrakech

Spring and fall are perfect — warm days, cool evenings, blooming gardens. Summer is brutal (40°C+); winter is mild but the riads can be cold at night.

Where to stay in Marrakech

Medina

The 1,000-year-old walled old city. Riads, souks, palaces, and the famous Jemaa el-Fnaa square. Stay here.

Gueliz

The French-built new town outside the walls. European-style cafés, contemporary galleries, and Yves Saint Laurent's Jardin Majorelle.

Hivernage

Modern hotel and restaurant district between the medina and Gueliz. Polished but characterless.

Mellah

The old Jewish quarter inside the medina. Quieter, with a different vibe and the city's spice market.

Best things to do in Marrakech

The experiences locals and seasoned travelers actually recommend.

landmark

Jemaa el-Fnaa at sunset

The world's most theatrical public square. Storytellers, musicians, snake charmers, food stalls firing up at dusk. Sit at a rooftop café for the wide view.

shopping

Souk shopping

Get genuinely lost in the alleys north of Jemaa el-Fnaa. Bargain hard (start at 30% of asking), have mint tea with shopkeepers, and don't feel obligated to buy.

landmark

Bahia Palace

19th-century palace with intricate carved cedar ceilings, mosaic courtyards, and the best traditional Moroccan craftsmanship in the city.

nature

Jardin Majorelle

Yves Saint Laurent's restored botanical garden in cobalt blue. Buy combined tickets with the YSL Museum next door.

culture

Hammam

The traditional Moroccan steam bath ritual — scrub, soap, oil. Splurge at La Mamounia or stay local at a neighborhood hammam.

nature

Atlas Mountains day trip

An hour out of the city to Berber villages, waterfalls, and a tagine lunch in the cool mountain air. Imlil is the classic destination.

food

Cooking class

La Maison Arabe and Café Clock both run excellent half-day cooking classes — souk visit, then learning to make tagine and msemen.

Marrakech travel FAQ

How many days do you need in Marrakech?+

Three days for the city, plus one or two for an Atlas Mountains or Essaouira day trip. Five days total is ideal.

Is Marrakech safe for women?+

Mostly yes, but be prepared for verbal attention in the souks. Dress modestly (covered shoulders, knees), be assertive, and consider a guided tour for your first medina walk.

How aggressive are the touts?+

Honest answer: aggressive. The medina has scammers, fake guides, and persistent shopkeepers. Be polite but firm. Smile and say 'la, shukran' (no, thank you) and keep walking.

Should I stay in a riad?+

Yes. A riad — a traditional house built around a tiled courtyard — is the experience. Many are stunning and surprisingly affordable. Note that riads can be hard to find on first arrival; arrange a pickup.

Do I need to speak Arabic or French?+

French is more useful than Arabic in the city. English is increasingly common in the tourism trade. Basic French goes a long way.
