Istanbul straddles Europe and Asia across the Bosphorus and has been a capital of empires for nearly 2,000 years. Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, Topkapı Palace, and the Grand Bazaar are all within walking distance in the historic Sultanahmet district. The contemporary city across the Golden Horn — Beyoğlu, Karaköy, Galata — has the best food, bars, and design hotels. Take a Bosphorus ferry, eat your way through the markets, and embrace the call to prayer drifting across the city five times a day.

Where to stay in Istanbul

Sultanahmet

The historic peninsula. Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, Topkapı, Basilica Cistern, the Grand Bazaar — all within walking distance.

Beyoğlu (Galata, Karaköy)

The cosmopolitan modern center across the Golden Horn. Galata Tower, İstiklal Avenue, the city's best dining and nightlife.

Beşiktaş & Ortaköy

Bosphorus-front neighborhoods with cafés on the water and the iconic Ortaköy Mosque under the bridge.

Kadıköy (Asian side)

Across the water on the Asian continent. Hipster cafés, markets, no tourists. Take the ferry over for an afternoon.

Balat & Fener

The old Greek and Jewish quarters along the Golden Horn. Painted houses, antique shops, Instagram-worthy without being polished.

Best things to do in Istanbul

The experiences locals and seasoned travelers actually recommend.

landmark

Hagia Sophia

1,500-year-old former cathedral, then mosque, then museum, now mosque again. The interior is breathtaking. Free; cover hair (women) and shoulders.

landmark

Blue Mosque

Sultan Ahmed Mosque — six minarets and 20,000 hand-painted blue tiles. Free, but closed during prayer times.

landmark

Topkapı Palace

Ottoman royal residence for 400 years. Don't skip the Harem (separate ticket) — it's the most atmospheric part.

shopping

Grand Bazaar

4,000 shops in 60 covered streets. Carpets, jewelry, ceramics, leather. Bargain hard, accept the tea, walk away if needed.

nature

Bosphorus ferry

Take the public ferry to Anadolu Kavağı (90 minutes each way). Cheap, scenic, no tourist trap.

culture

Turkish bath (hammam)

Çemberlitaş Hamamı (built 1584) is the most atmospheric historic option. Newer hammams are less authentic but more comfortable.

food

Spice Bazaar & street food crawl

Eminönü's spice bazaar, plus the surrounding street food — balık ekmek (fish sandwiches at the Galata Bridge) and Turkish delight stalls.

Istanbul travel FAQ

How many days do you need in Istanbul?+

Four days minimum. Three is rushed; five lets you see both the historic core and the contemporary city without sprinting.

Is Istanbul safe?+

Generally yes, with normal big-city precautions. Watch for pickpockets in the Grand Bazaar and around tourist sites. Avoid obvious tourist scams (shoe-shiners, restaurant touts).

What's the deal with the Turkish lira?+

High inflation has made Turkey extremely affordable for foreign visitors. Use a card with no foreign transaction fees and pay in lira, not dollars.

Do I need to dress modestly?+

Only at mosques (women cover hair and shoulders, everyone covers knees). Elsewhere, normal Western dress is fine.

Should I hire a guide for the historic sites?+

Yes — Hagia Sophia and Topkapı reward an expert telling you what you're seeing. Book a half-day private guide through Withlocals or a reputable agency.
