Berlin is a city in constant rebellion against polish. The history is everywhere — the Wall, the bunkers, the bombed-and-rebuilt churches — but so is a creative scene that has made the city the cultural capital of Europe for the under-40 set. Stay in Mitte, Kreuzberg, or Neukölln; eat döner kebab from a Turkish stand; spend an afternoon at Museum Island; and at least one evening in a bar that might still be open at 8am the next day.

Best time to visit Berlin

Berlin truly comes alive in summer — beer gardens, lakes, open-air clubbing. Spring and early fall are also lovely. Winter is cold and gray; only come in December for Weihnachtsmärkte.

Where to stay in Berlin

Mitte

The historic center — Brandenburg Gate, Museum Island, Reichstag, the best concentration of attractions for first-timers.

Kreuzberg

Turkish heritage, immigrant cool, the best döner and the most famous club (Berghain on the eastern edge).

Neukölln

Sister to Kreuzberg, even more bohemian — cafés, art spaces, and the Tempelhofer Feld park (a former airport).

Prenzlauer Berg

Once-radical East Berlin neighborhood now polished and family-friendly. Cobblestones, indie boutiques, Sunday brunches.

Friedrichshain

Former East with the East Side Gallery (the painted Wall section) and Berlin's wildest nightlife around Warschauer Strasse.

Best things to do in Berlin

The experiences locals and seasoned travelers actually recommend.

landmark

Brandenburg Gate & Reichstag

The iconic gate and the dome of the German parliament. Book the Reichstag dome free in advance — it's worth it for the view.

culture

Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe

Peter Eisenman's field of 2,711 concrete stelae. The underground information center is essential.

culture

Museum Island

Five major museums on a UNESCO-listed island — the Pergamon (when reopened), the Neues, the Altes, the Bode. The Pergamon Altar and the Bust of Nefertiti are the highlights.

culture

East Side Gallery

1.3km of the Berlin Wall covered in murals along the Spree. Free, open-air, and surprisingly moving.

nightlife

Berghain (or trying)

The world's most famous techno club. Notoriously selective at the door; dress in black, go in small groups, don't speak English in line.

nature

Tempelhofer Feld

Former airport turned vast public park. Bike the runways, BBQ in the meadows, watch kite-surfers.

food

Currywurst & döner

Curry 36 (Kreuzberg) for currywurst, Mustafa's Gemüse Kebap (Mehringdamm) for the city's most famous döner. Both worth the queue.

Berlin travel FAQ

How many days do you need in Berlin?+

Four days minimum — there's a lot of history to absorb and the city sprawls. A week lets you explore neighborhoods and not feel rushed.

Is Berlin cheap?+

Cheaper than Paris, London, or Amsterdam. Hotels, food, and drinks are reasonable; museums are well priced.

Is Berlin safe?+

Yes, with normal big-city precautions. Even the famously edgy clubs and bar areas are safe to walk around.

How is the public transport?+

Excellent. U-Bahn, S-Bahn, trams, buses — all run on the same ticket. Buy a daily or weekly pass and use it freely.

Should I learn German?+

Helpful but not essential. English fluency in Berlin is among the highest in Germany — most service workers under 40 speak it well.
