Athens

The original Western capital — the Acropolis, world-class museums, and a contemporary food scene that quietly rivals Lisbon's.

Athens has been undersold for years. Yes, the city is chaotic and not particularly pretty in the way Paris or Rome are pretty — but the Acropolis is genuinely overwhelming, the Acropolis Museum is one of the best modern museums in Europe, and the Plaka and Anafiotika neighborhoods feel like Greek island villages dropped in the middle of the city. The food has had a renaissance, and the prices are still reasonable. Three days is enough; pair it with islands.

Best time to visit Athens

Spring and early fall avoid the brutal July-August heat and the worst tourist crush. May and October are particularly lovely.

Where to stay in Athens

Plaka

Old town directly under the Acropolis. Cobblestoned, touristy but charming, with the best concentration of restaurants for first-time visitors.

Monastiraki

Flea market square next to Plaka. Great street food, rooftop bars with Acropolis views, and the Sunday antique market.

Koukaki

Up-and-coming residential neighborhood south of the Acropolis. Hip cafés, small hotels, and a 5-minute walk to the museum.

Exarcheia

The city's bohemian, anarchist, slightly edgy student district. Cheap eats, indie bookshops, political street art.

Kolonaki

Polished and upscale district near the National Garden. Designer shops, art galleries, and the funicular up Lycabettus.

Best things to do in Athens

The experiences locals and seasoned travelers actually recommend.

landmark

Acropolis & Parthenon

The 5th-century BC marble citadel above the city. Buy timed tickets in advance and go early morning to beat the heat.

culture

Acropolis Museum

Modern museum at the foot of the Acropolis with the surviving sculptures and friezes. The glass floor reveals ancient ruins below.

landmark

Ancient Agora

Where Socrates argued with Plato. Quieter than the Acropolis itself, with the perfectly preserved Temple of Hephaestus.

neighborhood

Anafiotika

A tiny whitewashed Cycladic village built into the slope below the Acropolis. Easy to miss; magical when you find it.

nature

Mount Lycabettus sunset

Take the funicular up for the best panorama of the city, the Parthenon glowing in the evening light.

food

Souvlaki & gyros crawl

Kostas (the famous one in Plaka), Bairaktaris, Thanasis. Cheap, fast, and outrageously good.

Day trip to Cape Sounion

90 minutes south to the Temple of Poseidon on a cliff over the Aegean. Time it for sunset.

Athens travel FAQ

How many days do you need in Athens?+

Two to three days for the city itself, then move on to the islands. Add a day if you want to do Cape Sounion or Delphi.

Is Athens worth visiting?+

Absolutely — and it's been unfairly skipped for years. Three days is enough to see the Acropolis and the Acropolis Museum, eat well, and explore the neighborhoods.

Is Athens safe?+

Generally yes. Be alert in Omonia and around the train station after dark, and watch for pickpockets on the metro.

When should I avoid Athens?+

July-August: brutal heat (often above 38°C), crowded ruins, and locals fleeing to the islands. April-May and September-October are perfect.

Should I combine Athens with islands?+

Yes — most travelers do. Athens 2-3 days, then ferry or fly to Santorini, Mykonos, Crete, or Naxos for a week.
